max bill georges vantongerloo – a working friendship
«i was shown the new works by max bill and i had to come to terms with them. they seemed to have an aggressive potential, sometimes a genial gesture. i also saw two josef albers paintings and finally rare examples of vantongerloo's work whose quality gave me the greatest pleasure. bill did not resent this. he was not offended as an artist.
bill: yes, i have also my difficulties with bill – but I cannot paint like vantongerloo (in: angela thomas, diary, 27th june 1978).
I was so delighted with the 'lightness' [leichtigkeit] of vantongerloo that bill suggested I write about him as he so inspired me. this came as a great surprise to me. he, bill, would let me have material from the vantongerloo archive. this is how it happened that my dissertation angela thomas: 'denkbilder – material for the development of georges vantongerloo' (edition marzona, düsseldorf 1987) was printed.»
